a four word subject
It's 8 am on Christmas eve and I've been up since 7:30. How utterly messed up is that? I was having this dream that we were playing this HUGE stage in Newfoundland or something and they kept handing me a keyboard and I had to keep giving it back and telling the people I played bass. Then I was teaching some little girl how to rig a boat. In Newfoundland. And then I tossed and turned for half an hour or so trying desperately to get back to sleep but to no avail. So I've now decided to hunker down with some pop tarts and explain what's been up with Kiev of late.
No use in overlooking the Coke commercial we filmed a couple days ago, that's kind of a big one. Basically, they emailed us and told us to audition [MANY f***in THANKS TO GINA YOUNG AND THOSE AT THE KNITTING FACTORY WHO RECOMMENDED US]. After a series of rushed tapes were sent off, and a lot of hurry-up-and-wait, they picked us and came down with their crew to Ithaca to shoot for 3 days. Lance, Mike, Griffin, Anthony, Justyn, Peter, Amy, Jill, Evelyn, Jeffery, Mort, and Jermaine all warmed my heart and were a pleasure to work with. Seriously, completely awesome, funny, genuine people that I was really sad to see go. On that, the spot should air mid January.
Another dilema we're now faced with is the ownership of Kiev. I don't mean like coke owns us in some binding contract, but there's a band out in California called Kiev that copyrighted before we did. F***. Go them. So what the hell are 3 musicians to do when they're essentially robbed of their name? Look wildly for alternatives. I think keeping it simple, one word (maybe even an eastern European city?), not pretentious, ambiguous. But it turns out once you're looking for ambiguity, every name paints a portrait. Now what plagues me though...does a rose by another name really smell as sweet? So I put out a call to all the people who ever read this (and apparently the demographic includes my English teacher..),give us a hand, yeah? If you've any ideas for a name that would embody kiev and not crush her (or any ideas at all) please tell me. Now. Right now, go and comment this instant, I know you've got one in there somewhere!
So I guess that wraps it up right now for Kiev news. I'm dying my hair orange because (among other things) I'm throwing my support for the Orange party in Ukraine and supporting Yushenko. Also, orange hair has been my destination for a while. So you can say goodbye to Maia with her Marilyn/Courtney locks and welcome a new politically fueled (ahhah, not really) hair color.
Because this blog didn't have much of my usually "provocative language" (quote: Ms. Vinch), I'd like to add a foot note

Change the band's name to "Kyiv" ... it's the alternate spelling preferred by the Ukranian government :-)

Dude. You should call Kiev Dissonance.
Definition: A harsh, disagreeable combination of sounds; discord.
Haha. But it sounds cool.

Maia: I'm your second cousin living in Austin, Texas. A certain fan of yours let me in on your band. You guys are great! (Also, I used to have a pit bull... his name was Spock and he was awesome -- shameless plug for beloved pet.) But I'm writing to give you an opinion on the name thing. I think you need to keep the name Kiev, because it's already gaining some momentum. And if you absolutely can't because of the copyright thing, then go with the suggestion of someone else who posted here, and call yourselves "Kyiv". I really think you can't give up the name entirely. All the best.

i'm just glad ukraine gets more exposure w/this name! up until all this election chaos, ukraine is rarely mentioned in the u.s. and even though the music may have nothing to do w/actual ukrainian culture, it is still appreciated ;) i must agree the ENG/UKR spelling Kyiv would be pretty unique; but don't be suprised if you get tons of emails asking if you guys are actually ukrianian! (maia does sound ukrainian)
